Dark Vala and his Dragon by Brunild Dark Vala and his Dragon by Brunild
This painting is inspired to the Black Silmarillion -This is Melkor with Ancalagon The Black ( Ḷmion in the BBoA).
This picture does not illustrate a particular scene from the book, but it is my personal interpretation of the character :)

(Oil on canvas)

you depicted Melkor as an awesome angel like face.but as a Valar he might really look like an angel despite the monster within.:clap:good job

I apologize for not having added a caption under the pic.
The Black Silmarillion is know in English as The Black Book of Arda that is a novel, published in Russia around 1992, by Vasylieva N. and Nekrasova N.
This book ritell the Tolkien's Silmarillion by Melkor's perspective: Eru and the Valar are mercyless tyrant.

I love your painting very very much! Those hands, and the dragon, and all the detalization, and you even didn't forget about the scars on Melkor's face! Not to mention I am surprised that there are people outside Russia who know about "The black book of Arda".

Thanks for your kind comment! I'm glad you like it and it is always a pleasure to find people who know the Black  Book. Yes, in my country someone knows it and has decided to translate it.

I decided to draw the dragon next to Melkor as in the story of Nien, dragons are positive creatures ;)

Thank you for appreciating my interpretation of Melkor  ! In fact, in this book he is described with a pleasant look and I imagined it looks like this.
However I see that in recent times the trends have changed, if it was almost impossible to find images in which he came portrayed in a beautiful shape, today there are many more to luck ;)

Thank you for having appreciated!

In truth, even if it may seem strange, I always imagined that he was beautiful, even in the writings of Tolkien ;)

He was, until he met Ungoliant, then he staid in an evil form. He could still have beautiful face, though. Hard to paint, but it could be beauty with so much hatred inside that it felt evil.

It is true, I agree. If I remember correctly Tolkien uses adjectives like dark, majestic, tall, terrible, and these adjectives may be subject to personal interpretation.
But I do not remember reading descriptions such as "ugly", "hideous" :)

I think you've achieved already great technical skill. Your pictures look quite professional. I wouldn't be surprised of seeing them as illustrations of actual Tolkien books. I'd like to see them in them, in fact. :D

Thank you very much, your words are really kind and beautiful, an incentive to improve! Eh eh I do not think you'll ever see these things alongside the official Tolkien's drawings! They are too out canon! I am a bit' heretical XD :D

Well, a lot of the "official" Tolkien drawings are quite out of canon. For example, when they draw Melkor with the black armor ALL THE TIME. I mean, he put that just to battle Fingolfin; I don't think he wore it the whole day, that would be so uncomfortable! XD

Yes, it's true. In fact, in the Silmarillion Tolkien wrote that he wielded weapons once in a lifetime. Maybe it's a stereotype rooted in the imagination of fans, portraying Morgoth always with the black armor.
I always think of the painting by famous artist, Ted N. (I do not remember how to spell it), and to his note illustration of Melkor and Fingolfin, where the face of Melkor it seems quite unlikely
( for me). Yes, he is bad but it's still an Ainu and I think his appearance is more noble, after all.
Tall and terrible does not necessarily mean ugly. :)

You must mean this image: [link]
XDDDDDDDDDDDD God, that's hilariously UGLY! I wonder how on Earth did he manage to seduce so many Maiar with that face. He's better here, however: [link]
Also, I don't know what makes people think that he was a giant. If he was that big, I doubt Fingolfin would have been able to injure him so bad, or that he could have stepped on Fingolfin's neck. He would have stepped on all of him!

Yesss!!!XD It 'just the image that I mentioned, the second one is better! Could hardly seduce someone with that face :giggle:! And Beren how could he have the courage to pull off a Silmaril from the crown!? Many artists portray Morgoth as a giant, but if he were really so great, he would immediately crushed Fingolfin; without a fight.
I, however, believe that Melkor had charm in a dark way(a bit 'as Galadriel when, in the film, is seduced from the ring) ;)

Amazing!! The eye of the dragon and the scales are simply amazing. But Melkor is even better. Majestic and powerful.

If you want an advice I would had lighten a bit more his upper hand.

Great job!

Thank you :tighthug: !! You are really nice and your suggestions are precious for me ! It 's true at that point I should have used more light, but then I thought that his hands were burned, and so I left. Although, in fact it would be better to lighten ;)

You're welcome. I'm always glad to lend a hand. I didn't know his hands were burned. I supose I will have to read the Black Book of Arda someday :)

By the way: you improved a lot. The proportions of his face remind are nearly perfect (at least for me) and thus you transmit the sensation of some divinity inside him. Also the way you cast the shadows of his face and hair, gives the picture a lot of deep. It's like you shape it in clay. Good work!!
